Tennis Season Begins

Much to the dismay of graduating seniors or tired juniors, summer is still out of reach. However, spring is sprung, and pollen has filled the air. What does spring bring in its tow? That’s right, tennis. Each and every tennis enthusiast at Billings Central can be found at Rose Park after school. Spring activities have started, and the tennis season is well underway.

“I am super excited for the season to start,” said Evie Reck, a junior tennis player. “We have a lot of talent and a big team, so that will definitely help us out.” Reck is a returning player and reminisces about last year. Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams were crowned State Champions, a bittersweet moment for the seniors. Carl Puetz and Gabo Giammattei got second in doubles to contribute to the boys’ win. Meanwhile, Loree Reck and Zi’Onna Leikam-Morton got second in doubles for the girls and Evelyn Nelson got second in singles. However, there is only one person of those five who will be returning.

That doesn’t deter Reck and the other returning players, however. “We have a lot of freshmen this year who are going out for tennis,” says Reck. “I’m hoping that we will get some talent there.”

One of the freshmen in question, Alex Johnson, is also eager for the season to begin. “I’m excited to see how the tennis team is and how it will go for me as an individual and the team,” he stated. It is definitely going to be interesting to follow the tennis team and watch how they overcome adversity to succeed on the court. There are some notable changes to the tennis program from years past, including a new uniform added this year to provide more unity to the boys’ and girls’ teams. Divisionals is set for May 18 and 19, with State the following week. Athletes continue to strive and prepare for their big moment on the court.
