Dress-up days for homecoming week are a long-standing tradition at Central. This year, though, student council did things a bit differently. At the beginning of September, a poll went out to the whole student body to vote on the winning themes whereas, last year, only student council voted. That way, everyone had a part in picking the themes, and the themes picked were in the favor of the majority.
To kick off the week, students dressed up with the theme of “country vs. country club”. This was a simple and easy—yet fun—theme to start the week off. Many students wore colorful tennis skirts, collared shirts, khaki shorts, and tied cardigans. Others wore cowboy boots, flannels, and belt buckles. There was a fairly good split for each side of the theme. However, if you walked through Central, there was no doubt that there was more country club than country roaming the halls. Father John took a count of all the seniors in his classes and concluded that country club had the winning numbers throughout the senior class.
On Tuesday of Homecoming week, the theme was “Barbenheimer”. This summer, two huge movies hit theaters simultaneously: Barbie and Oppenheimer. There were trends circulating on social media in which people would go to both movies back-to-back which led to the creation of “Barbenheimer”. These movies were very influential in pop culture over the last few months, so it is no surprise this theme had a high number of votes. Barbie outfits clearly overtook Oppenheimer within the walls of Central; pink was seen everywhere you looked. Some people dressed up as specific Barbies, and some simply wore a pink outfit. Many colorful Kens also made an appearance. Nevertheless, Oppenheimer was not completely overlooked. Some strayed from the majority, wore suits and hats, and nailed the Oppenheimer side of the theme. Senior Jacob Burmeister, really took on the theme fully. He wore a pink dress and a blazer, encapsulating both aspects of the very double-sided theme. Overall, this day had very high participation and was a big hit.
On Wednesday BC took a snooze from the elaborate dress-up days in the beginning of the week and relaxed with a pajama day. This day allowed the student body to relax in various onesies, plaid pajama pants, and even simple sweatpants.
“Character Day” was the theme on Thursday; it created a wide variety of costumes and let the students’ personalities shine through. There were single costumes, duos, trios, and even groups of 5 or more. Mario and Luigi, Ted Lasso, The Ninja Turtles, and the Men in Black were all some characters that made an appearance for this theme.
Friday, of course, was spirit day! The school’s Ram Pride was on full display that day with green flooding the halls as the students buzzed with the excitement of the day. Many went all out and wore green masks, green glitter on their faces, and even green skirts and capes. The most memorable costume of this day, according to junior Billie Cate Schmitt and many others, was senior Matthew Rah’s 3-D printed ram skull! Overall, the BCCHS student body really showed up with their school spirit during Homecoming of 2023, and they looked great doing it!
