Though the school year has just begun, activities at Central have been in full swing since mid-August. Many of Central’s students are involved in fall sports and exemplify community, leadership, and sportsmanship in their respective activities. On the soccer field, the Billings Central boys and girls teams have high hopes for their seasons.
This season, the motto for the boys’ team is “11 as One.” In this, the boys are working to play selflessly for the good of their team rather than for themselves. Senior Matthew Rah is optimistic about the season. “Our team dynamic is very strong this year, especially between upperclassmen and underclassmen,” he said. “We have people who are playing new positions to help better the team, and freshmen who are stepping up as well and making the team stronger.” So far, the “11 as One” concept has definitely made an impact against opponents. The boys started their season undefeated with a 7-0-2 record. “We have a pretty good chance at state this year, and I have high hopes for the future,” added Rah.
As for the girls’ team, they are adjusting to a new head coach. Coach Nolan Trafton stepped down after last season and is now juggling working as Central’s principal and coaching the boys’ soccer team. Coach Hallie Vervair has taken over the job of coaching the defending State A Girls Soccer Champions. “This year is definitely different,” said senior Sophie Hall. “Hallie brings a new perspective to the game and allows us freedom to try new positions on the field.” However, after losing seven seniors last year (5 of them on the starting roster), the Rams are being challenged and have faced some adversity with losses to Lockwood and Laurel. “It’s all about how we grow and overcome our challenges,” said Hall. “My hope is that we can learn from our mistakes and play stronger as a team.”
