For many students at Billings Central, going to The Pub is their favorite way to start their day. The Pub is a cafe run by Mr. Osborne and the students in his Advanced Business class. These students manage the financial aspects of The Pub as well as creating business plans and making and serving the food themselves. They sell a wide selection of breakfast foods and drinks including breakfast burritos, coffee, and their famous pub donuts. “The signature donuts: everybody gets those everyday,” said senior McKenna Larson. Her personal favorite, though, is the Red Bull charger. This year, the students are making some changes to how they run The Pub. Larson said, “We are incorporating the underclassmen more, so we have been trying to get them more involved.”
The Advanced Business students spend their first two months of class creating a business plan for The Pub, including menu items and special ideas throughout the year. Once they have chosen and prepared their business plan, they present it. After their business plan goes through, they begin training and advertising the opening. There are five different jobs that the students take on in the pub: barista, accountant, chef, manager, and donut baker. About two students are in charge of each of these jobs for a two-week period, and then they rotate.
Larson encourages people to join Advanced Business in the future. She said The Pub is a great opportunity for people who are looking to go into business in the future and is also very fun for people who aren’t interested in such career paths. The Pub is a great place for Billings Central students to grab breakfast, a sweet treat, or a pick-me-up coffee, or even just to hang out before the school day begins.
