Next spring, the Billings Central baseball team will make its debut thanks to the efforts of many parents and “student interest,” according to Central’s athletics director, Mike Ryan.
There are still many problems that will need to be worked out. Some of those problems include: finding a coaching staff, getting field arrangements, finding opponents to play, fundraising, and developing a budget. The first step to making sure that Billings Central will have baseball is to start fundraising and set a budget. Ryan said, “The program will be self-funded for the first 3 years.” Baseball is a very expensive sport, and traveling will also cost the team a lot of money. The limited number of teams in the state—with the 2024 season only being the second season of baseball in the state of Montana—may cause scheduling challenges. That means that the Central baseball team may have to travel to the west side of the state or even out of the state to play regular season games.
Another issue that the baseball team will run into is the field arrangements. With six teams in Billings, field arrangements could be difficult. Central’s team will need to work with the City of Billings to find fields to practice and play.
