As of February 12, many students recieved the opportunity to be inducted into the National Honors Society (NHS), which is an organization that recognizes students who have shown strength in academics, being a role model, giving back to the community, and strength of character. The National Honors Society was created on March 1,1921, by Dr. Edward Rynearson as a way to ignite students to be more engaged in their high schools. The organization has grown over the past century and currently has a total of 1.4 million members in the United States. Juniors with an a cumulative GPA of 92 or above were sent a letter from the school back in December, and two months later they were inducted into the NHS. On February 12, 42 students at Central were inducted into the National Honors Society, and they will join the other 1.4 million members in the organization.
Students must work very hard in school and receive strong grades in their respective classes. While having good grades is one of the key components to meeting the requirements for NHS, there are other qualities students must possess to show how they are capable of being part of the organization. They must show how they can be a leader and give back to the community, and how they can be a role model that others can follow. They must also show their strength of character throughout their years in high school. Alex Johnson, a junior and inductee into NHS, shared his thoughts on the organization. “I feel like National Honor Society is kind of an additional reward.” Alex Johnson talked about how the organization is a reward for maintaining good grades in school. He believes that it is already a reward to have good grades in academics, but the NHS induction makes it even more worth it. “Just focus on academics, focus on your schoolwork, not just for getting a National Honor Society, but for a well set up future in general.” Alex believes that the strongest element to being inducted is having strong grades in school. He believes that having good grades is not only necessary for being part of the NHS, but also for having a bright future and an even stronger college resume.

When Alex Johnson was asked if there was anything more that would be needed to get into the National Honors Society, he stated, “I engage in academics beyond, ‘simply the reward of getting a good grade,’ and I mean, I think that really represents the ideals of National Honor Society, in that it’s looking at people who engage in scholasticism and who enjoy the actual process.” Alex Johnson believes that the NHS is more than just good grades, and that the NHS is about students. The NHS cares about each student’s character and the qualities they demonstrate. Alex Johnson believes that it takes hard work and determination in order to be accepted into this organization, and that the NHS only accepts people with great personalities and a strong sense of character.
Overall, the National Honors Society can be a great opportunity for students who want to be role models at their schools. They can be a part of the community and show how they can make a change in others’ lives. The NHS can encourage these students and students who want to do more in their school lives.
