Billings Central’s swim teams, both boys and girls, have continued their legacy of excellence, clinching state championships this season. With these victories, this year now ties with 2010 for the most state championships in a single school year—seven in total! The wins are a testament to the talent, dedication, and hard work that define the Billings Central swim program.
A big part of this success is Coach Robyn O’Nan, whose leadership and guidance have been pivotal in helping the swimmers achieve their best. Under her coaching, the teams have thrived, and Coach O’Nan’s influence can be seen in both the athletes’ performance and the tight-knit atmosphere that defines the team.
For senior Brenda Twichel, the state championships were a major personal accomplishment. Despite only starting swimming last year, Brenda made it to state in both her seasons with the team, an impressive feat for someone so new to the sport. Although she did not place this year, making it to state was an achievement in itself. “My favorite memory from the season was the bus ride conversations,” Brenda said with a smile. “During my off time at state, I made slime with Anna, Maclayn, and Bailee, and we even created gymnastics routines that we performed for the team. It was a fun, lighthearted way to bond!” Reflecting on the season, Brenda shared her pride in being part of such an accomplished group. “It feels great to have another state championship, and I’m proud to be on a team with such incredible athletes,” she said. Looking ahead, Brenda knows the team will face some challenges, especially with 15 seniors graduating. “Next year, the team will still be strong, but since we’re losing a lot of seniors who have contributed so much, there might be a bit of a struggle at the start. But I know they will push through,” she added.

For fellow senior Kelly Early, a four-time personal state champion and longtime club swimmer, the success this season has been years in the making. Kelly’s experience has been a huge asset to the team, and she credits much of her success to the supportive environment at Billings Central. “I loved how it felt like a family. Everyone was so friendly, and we always uplifted and supported each other. The team atmosphere was amazing. I am super lucky to have swum for a team like Central’s,” Kelly said.
With the graduation of 15 seniors this year, including stars like Brenda and Kelly, Billings Central will undoubtedly feel the loss. However, the legacy of these athletes, combined with the leadership of Coach O’Nan, will continue to inspire future generations of swimmers. “I’ll miss the community and family aspect of the team,” Brenda shared. As for Kelly, she knows the team will carry on its winning tradition, saying, “I know they’ll keep the momentum going, and I can’t wait to see how the team continues to grow.”
This year’s state championships are a moment to celebrate, but they also mark the beginning of a new chapter for Billings Central’s swim teams. With strong foundations, exceptional athletes, and a culture of excellence, there is no doubt the future is bright for these swimmers.
