Despite the season being over, the wrestlers at Billings Central continue to compete during the offseason. The Montana Open, Montana’s largest AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) tournament, brings together wrestlers of all ages from multiple states. Kaius Rivera, a freshman at Billings Central, took first in the tournament. His win was highlighted by a 15-0 technical fall over Glasgow’s, Jack Morehouse, in the semifinals. Morehouse took second place overall at the state tournament in B/C 103#. This is a big win for Kaius, who has struggled against Morehouse in the past.
Rivera’s brother, Aramis Rivera, a junior at Billings Central, took third at 18U 120# through a win in overtime against state champion, Keegan Hunt. Hunt won AA 103# for Butte High in the state tournament. Owen Wegner, a sophomore at Billings Central, took home the trophy at 18U 106# through an 8-6 decision in the final match. Ashlyn McCann, an 8th grader at St. Francis, took home gold through a 51-second pin in the finals. McCann will wrestle for the Lady Rams next year. Ashlyn’s brother, Xander McCann, a sophomore at Billings Central, took second place through a pin in the true second match. Sophomore, Djay Wipf, took fourth in the same bracket. Freshman, Dane Mueller, took third at 15U 200#, while eighth grader, Johnny Foster, took fourth. AAU Club Wrestling Team Montana Disciples, the club that the Rams wrestlers compete under in the offseason, took eleventh out of thirty teams competing in the Open.
