On December 17th, the Billings Central Music Department performed their annual Christmas Cantata called, “Evening in December”. Directed by Mr. Martinez, the band, choir, and orchestra performed 15 movements together. Many students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be able to play the whole concert as one unified group. Throughout the performance, there were other choir and band solos. Within the performance, students were able to share their musical talent with others and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

While the first-year students were able to experience their first cantata, the seniors experienced their last. This December marks their final cantata experience at BCCHS. Many seniors from the music department can testify that cantata is an incredibly special event because of the conjoined effort of all three music groups. Choir member, soloist, and senior in this year’s cantata, Olivia Guenthner, expressed her appreciation for the communal atmosphere of cantata as she explained, “I love the community that we have, we get to have fun with each other and learn something new.” Like many other seniors, Guenthner also explained that she enjoyed connecting with others from the various ensembles. Through the preparation and experience of cantata, students can engage with other music ensembles—creating a unified environment for every student.

While interaction within the ensembles is highly valued, cantata is also a terrific way for students to celebrate the Christmas season— using their gifts and talents together as one. Flutist and senior, Sarah Spini, had a solo in the cantata this year and has enjoyed being able to take part in cantata over her high school career. Reflecting on her cantata experience, Spini explained, “As a senior I will miss the magic that comes out of cantata because it’s about Jesus and it’s about playing music for Jesus and there’s something really special and unique about that that we don’t get at other concerts.” Although the other concerts during the year are a wonderful way for students to share their talent, the Christmas Cantata gives them the opportunity to use their gifts and talents to create a unified piece of music for the purpose of celebrating the birth of Christ.
The Christmas Cantata allows for students to interact with other ensembles and work together to create a piece as one large group. It also allows students to use their musical skills for the purpose of celebrating Christmas. Each student is presented with the opportunity to contribute their efforts into one big performance. This year’s Christmas Cantata was a true success and Central’s Music Department looks forward to another year of performing this extraordinary concert, centered around celebrating the birth of Christ and the true meaning of Christmas.
