Female students at Central took a survey in the winter this year about wether or not they were interested in being involved in flag football. The popular answer was “yes” which led to the school adding the sport to the fall sport list.
The new program at Central has already created excitement among students. The sport allows girls to try out a new sport and find new classmates who are interested in it. Many students also see it as a chance to compete in a fast-paced environment while also building friendships and school spirit.
Flag football has quickly grown in popularity to become a sport available in many other Billings schools. Many schools across the country have also started adding girls’ flag football programs as the sport continues to grow in popularity. Some states have even started recognizing it as an official high school sport.
Flag football is similar to traditional football, but instead of getting tackled, people pull flags attached around the athlete’s waist to stop the play. It is a fast-paced game focusing heavily on speed, teamwork, strategy, and communication.
Central administrators hope the addition of flag football will encourage more students to join extracurricular activities and help strengthen the school’s athletic community..
