Girls’ flag football is a fast-growing sport in Montana. Many of the high schools in Montana have added it to their fall sports schedule, along with boys’ and girls’ soccer, football, boys’ and girls’ golf, and volleyball. Central is also thinking about adding it onto their fall schedule.
This began as a question from a group of girls who asked Mr. Trafton and Mr. Ryan about the possibility of Central adding a girls’ flag football team. Their interest surprised administrators in the best way. “The reason we’re looking at adding flag football is because the students came to us about it,” Mr. Ryan, Central’s Athletic Director, stated. “If they are interested, it’s something we can pursue.”

To see how many people would be interested in the sport, the school sent out a survey to current freshmen, sophomores, and junior girls. After the survey concluded, many girls showed interest in being part of a team. 29 students said that they were somewhat to very interested in joining a girls’ flag football team.
Those numbers have pushed the school to begin early planning. “The chances of having a team next fall are pretty good,” Mr. Ryan said. “We are still learning about the process ourselves, but we are moving forward.”
While details such as practice space, equipment, and coaching are still up in the air, the school has a meeting scheduled in January and is looking to move forward with the possibility of a girls’ flag football team.
